Hepatitis and Liver Disease

Objective

  • To identify applicants at risk of developing hepatitis/liver disease
  • To Further investigate applicants at risk of developing hepatitis/liver disease
  • Assessing this risk is crucial due to the danger to public health and the significant burden on public funded health services, including the potential need for specialized treatment and liver transplants.

Risk Factors :

  • Intravenous drug abuse
  • high-risk sexual activity or a sexual partner with viral hepatitis
  • household contact with an infected person, especially if personal items are shared
  • receipt of unscreened blood products
  • needle-stick injury or other occupational exposure (for example, health-care workers)
  • children born to mothers with chronic hepatitis B or C infection
  • Tattoos and body piercing not done with an aseptic technique
  • history of incarceration
  • HIV or other sexually transmitted infection
  • hemodialysis

Additional investigation may be required for some clients :

  • All applicants with any risk factor for hepatitis B or C will be tested for hepatitis B and C.
  • All clients with HIV- or syphilis-positive tests will be tested for hepatitis B and C.
  • If you have a history of hepatitis B or C/liver disease, please bring your medical records if available
  • Screening for HIV, if not already done, will be required, regardless of age.
  • Other investigations may be required on request by the relevant embassy.
