Tuberculosis Screening

Why we screen for TB ?

  • Diagnose and treat active TB
  • Limit further transmission of the disease
  • Minimize risks of poor outcomes, including social consequences
  • migration legislation requires entrants to be free from active TB
  • IME aims to identify applicants needing treatment for active or latent TB
  • Panel Physicians provide public health benefits for both their community and migrating populations

TB screening is required for:

  • Identification of clients with active TB or LTBI
  • Investigation of clients where there is clinical suspicion of active TB or LTBI
  • Investigation of clients who are close contacts of an individual with active TB
  • Identification and investigation of high risk clients for TB
  • Referral to a specialist for further investigation and treatment of suspected active or latent TB
  • Completion and grading of an IME of a client with active TB or latent LTBI

Screening for TB can include most or all of the following:

  • Medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Chest radiography (CXR)
  • Testing for previous exposure to tuberculous antigens
  • Sputum testing for mycobacterium tuberculous (MTB)
  • Testing for HIV disease.

Instructions for all clients requiring an IME:

  1. Screening for tuberculosis during the medical history review and physical examination. Require a postero-anterior chest x-ray (CXR) for clients aged 11 and older.

  2. Require an antero-posterior and lateral CXR for clients under 11 with a history of TB infection/treatment in a high-risk TB group (as defined below).

  3. We usually follow the tuberculosis screening algorithm to detect TB.
